In an exclusive, we sit down with the dynamic and talented actor Kim Min-Jae, whose portrayal of the charismatic Jin Moo-Hak in the hit romantic comedy “Dali and Cocky Prince” has stolen hearts and tickled funny bones alike. With his infectious energy and natural charm, Kim Minjae shares insights into his journey into acting, his experiences on set, and his thoughts on the beloved drama.
How did you get into acting?
I watch a lot of TV series and movies since I was young but I didn’t actually become an actor. I stumbled upon an acting class and I found it really interesting to show different types of emotions and how to express them as a whole different person through acting.
What was your first reaction when you read the script for “Dali and Cocky Prince”?
I thought the story was fun. Jin Moo-Hak’s personality and his way of talking was fun. The way he solved things as he met Dali was interesting. It’s a romantic comedy so I thought the story would be fun to partake in.
Was there any special preparations you did for the role?
Jin Moo-Hak is a character full of energy and is a bit crude, so I always listen to music before filming to be able to give off that energy when I act.
What is Pork Back-bone Stew to Jin Moo-Hak?
It’s his life. It all started with a small restaurant that sells that food since he was young and is now a company.
Is there any similarities or differences between you and your character?
I think we’re both similar in a way where we’re sensitive when it comes to work and we both love what we do but other than that, everything is different between myself and Jin Moo-Hak
Is there any memorable lines in the drama for you?
It would definitely be “What a load of garbage (똥 싸고 있네)”. When I first encountered this line, I was really flustered. I wondered if I can express the line well, but as I focus on the character and filming it became a line that I can easily say and a line that expresses Jin Moo-Hak the best.
What would you say the funniest scene in the drama is?
There’s so many to choose from. But if I have to choose, it would be episode 13th or 14th where I was dancing in front of Wontak and Dali in the rooftop room. I remember everyone laughing as soon as the director said ‘cut’
Did you face any difficulties while filming the drama?
I don’t think there was anything in particular that was difficult on set. Whenever I act, it’s hard and scary.
How was working with actress Park Gyu-Young?
It was so much fun. Park Gyu-Young did really well as Dali so it was fun working with her. I hope to meet her again soon.
Do you have any favorite song from the drama’s OST?
I really like “Moon Crater” by Kim Ye-Ji. I’ve been listening to this song since it was released.
What should fans look forward to in the upcoming episodes?
I think it would be great to see how our characters will get through the hardships in the future. Since it’s coming to an end, fans will feel a range of emotions, so please look forward to it.
What would you say your life’s movie is?
That’s a hard question to answer because I have a bunch of favorite movies. I think it’s “Love Actually”, I watched it alone at the movie theater and I remember sitting down for a long time when the movie ended.
Do you have a dream role?
I want to experience a lot of genres and play a lot of characters I’ve never tried before. I want to become a deeper and a more interesting actor in my 30s.
Message to fans
Because of my fans, I gain strength and comfort. That’s why I want to become a better actor. I saw a comment saying that they’re thankful that I’m an actor and that’s when I thought “No, I’m more thankful that you’re my fan”. Thank you so much for being my inspiration. Please stay with me for a long time.
